    IMPACTS
    The dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in 30 minutes or less. Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures.
    PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS
    Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves. Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside.

One Person Dead and Multiple Injured from Head-on Collision in Rural Bureau County

A head-on collision in rural Bureau County kills one and injures multiple people. Around 2:40 AM on February 2, 2024, the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office responded to a motor vehicle accident on Illinois Highway 40 south of 1000 N Avenue. A Honda Odyssey, driven by an 87-year-old individual, was traveling southbound on Highway 40 when the vehicle crossed into the northbound lane and struck a Dodge Ram. The 87-year-old driver of the Honda was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver and other occupants in the Dodge Ram were transported to OSF St. Luke in Kewanee, OSF St. Francis in Peoria, and OSF Saint Claire in Princeton for treatment.

This accident remains under investigation by the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office. Identification of the deceased individual is pending notification of the family by the Bureau County Coroner. Stark County EMS, Buda Fire Department, Princeton EMS, Wyanet EMS, IDOT, and the Illinois State Police assisted with the accident.
