Sportsbooks oppose proposed tax increase

Sportsbooks are fighting back against a proposed sports betting tax hike in Illinois. Gov. J.B. Pritzker is proposing increasing the tax for sportsbook companies from 15% to 35%. Companies like DraftKings and FanDuel have formed the Sports Betting Alliance in opposition to the tax hike. If approved, they warn it may drive some sportsbooks out of Illinois. Bettors are receiving messages on their apps urging them to write Illinois lawmakers and oppose the governor’s proposed tax increase.

Uber security upgrade in Chicago

Uber is unveiling a security upgrade across Chicago and 11 other U.S. cities Thursday. Riders will now be verified to make sure they are who they claim to be. The company said the move is in response to security and safety concerns from drivers around the country. Uber will cross reference personal information from accounts to make the verification.

E-notary program announced

The Secretary of State’s Office has announced that Illinoisans will now be able to notarize documents electronically, rather than in-person. The “E-Notary” system will allow customers and notaries to electronically sign and notarize documents from their home or office. Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said the change is part of the ongoing effort to modernize procedures.
