The sentencing hearing for the Granite City man convicted of two counts of first-degree murder for the death of Knox County Sheriff’s Office Deputy, Nick Weist, has been delayed to allow the Defense time to respond to the State. According to court documents, Attorney Bruce Carmen filed an objection to the mandatory natural life sentence in March. On May 6th, the defense indicated they had issues with the victim impact statements and objected to the mandatory life imprisonment, according to court documents.  Judge Kauzlarich granted the motion to continue made by Defense Attorney Bruce Carmen. A motion hearing is scheduled for June 10, 2024, at 9 AM.  The sentencing hearing is scheduled for August 9, 2024, at 9 AM.

Daylon Richardson pleaded guilty to Possession of a firearm by a felon (Class 2 Felony) and Aggravated Fleeing to Elude (Class 4 Felony) on October 23, 2023. Richardson was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder by a Jury on February 29, 2024.
