The Wethersfield School District Superintendant sent a letter, dated June 5th, to the City of Kewanee and HVN Capital LLC requesting TIF funds due to the future cannabis dispensary being near Wethersfield School. Dr. Brooks requested funds to enhance security and safety measures at Wethersfield School because “the placement of the cannabis dispensary so close to the district has raised concerns about the safety of our students and staff.” The Wethersfield School District is requesting $85,000 to remove the current fence and install a newer, more secure fence, enhance door security, improve lighting, and make security camera upgrades.
“These measures are vital to ensuring the safety and security of everyone within the school district. The funds requested will be used to address the vulnerabilities in our current security infrastructure and to provide a more secure environment for our students and staff. We believe that these enhancements are necessary in light of the proximity of the cannabis dispensary and the potential safety risk that it poses.”
The school district is requesting funds from the city TIF District because the school is located in a TIF District, that will benefit from HVN Capital LLC. The letter from Dr. Brooks said, “We believe that it is only fair that these funds be used to improve the safety and security of the school district, especially considering the concerns that have been raised about the location of the dispensary. Concerns not only raised by school community members, but by City council members as well.”
The letter said that this is an opportunity for the City of Kewanee and HVN Capital to show their commitment to ensuring the safety of Wethersfield School.
