On June 8, 2024, the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office was called to the decommissioned Cherry Mine outside Cherry, Illinois, following the discovery of severely decomposed human remains. An autopsy is pending to determine the deceased’s identity and cause of death. The Bureau County Coroner and Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigators are currently involved in the ongoing investigation.
