Eleven junior high students attended Camp Med at OSF Healthcare St. Luke Medical Center in Kewanee last week. They told RegionalMediaNews.com what their favorite part of Camp Med was. Volunteer Services Supervisor Brenda Streit spearheaded Camp Med, and she won the first OSF Trailblazer: Workforce of the Future Challenge for her Camp Med project. Camp Med was developed to give students interested in the medical field an opportunity to spend a week in the hospital to learn about various departments in the medical field. The program also introduces them to local career opportunities.

Camp Med students learned about biology, science, and veterinarian science in the new Ag Lab at Kewanee High School through a partnership between Kewanee High School and OSF St Luke Hospital. The junior high students visited the biology, advanced science, and veterinarian science labs and completed hands-on activities with KHS teachers and volunteers. Mrs. Callahan and student teacher Ms. Cagwin showed the students how to properly restrain animals to assist veterinarians. The students practiced on stuffed animals with the help of FFA volunteers Stardeja Jordan and Rachel DeRycke. Mrs. Ellerbrock demonstrated the Anatomage table, which is designed to teach students about all the major systems in the human body with digital imaging. The students learned about blood typing from Ms. Hoadley and completed a blood typing lab using simulated blood.
