The Princeton Public Library has announced a packed schedule of events for August. Highlights include the Read ‘Em and Weed Gardening Group, Page Turner’s Book Club, a historical presentation on Bureau County’s congressmen, an antique appraisal program, a journal-making workshop, Adult Coloring Night, a blood drive, and the monthly Writer’s Club meeting. These programs are designed to engage various interests and are open to all community members.

Join us Thursday August 1 at 5pm to join the Princeton Public Library’s Read ‘Em and Weed Gardening Group. This is a monthly program where gardeners can come share and receive advise for their plots at home. This program is free and all are welcome to attend.

The Princeton Public Library is hosting Page Turner’s monthly book club meeting. This month’s read is “West With Giraffes” by Lynda Rutledge. Join us and share your thoughts on our book for this month. This meeting is free to attend, and open to all.
Saturday August 10, 1pm
Join us Saturday August 10 at 1pm for Jim Dunn’s “Bureau County’s Other Congressmen” presentation. Most people have heard of Congressman Owen Lovejoy but what about Bureau County’s other congressmen? Jim Dunn, president of the Bureau County History Center Board, will present the stories of four other congressmen with deep connections to Bureau County. Attendees will learn about the congressman from Princeton who was called “The Father of the Hennepin Canal”; the congressman from Tiskilwa whom the opposing party helped to elect when they lost faith in their own incumbent; the congressman born in Ohio, Illinois, who voted to declare war on Germany during World War I; and the two-term congressman born in Dover whose son followed in his father’s footsteps by serving nearly a quarter of a century in Congress during the tumultuous 1940s and 1950s. This program is free and all are welcome to attend.

The Princeton Public Library is partnering with the Bureau County History Center to provide an antique appraisal program “Listen to your Heirlooms, Your Family's Treasures Have More to Say than Meets the Eye”. Call 815-875-1331 or stop by the circulation desk at the library to reserve your spot and receive paperwork for the appraisal. Appraisals are limited to one per person (one per family) and is limited to twenty appraisals total for the day. Drop offs for appraisals will be Saturday August 17th at 10 am. You must be registered to receive an appraisal. No walk ins will be accepted. Items that will NOT be appraised include: stamps, coins, fine jewelry, gemstones, firearms, weapons, furs or taxidermy. The program following the appraisals will start at 1pm and will include some items from our presenter, Carolyn Law. This program is free and all are welcome to attend.
Wednesday August 21,5-8pm
Join us Wednesday August 21 from 5-8, for Melody Best’s program “No Sew, No Spine, No Sweat Journals”. Perfect for beginners, experienced crafters, and everyone in between. We will make a fun and easy accordion fold mini album with room for 25 photos or sketches using 3 different kinds of enclosures. These make great gifts to give during the holiday season. Registration for this event can be by phone, 815-875-1331 or you can stop by the circulation desk to reserve a seat. Seating is limited (15 seats) and is secured upon payment (cash or check only). Checks can be made out to Melody Best. This class costs $30 and covers the cost of materials and instruction. Seating is limited so do not miss out!

The Princeton Public Library is hosting Adult Coloring Night Wednesday August 28 from 5-7pm. Join us for a night of relaxing music and coloring. Coloring pages and bookmarks will be provided by Princeton Public Library. We are also providing laminating with contact paper for bookmarks. Feel free to bring your own coloring book from home or any materials you would like to use if you have a preference. This program is free and all are welcome to attend.

Donate blood at our monthly blood drive, by ImpactLife at the Princeton Public Library. To register for this event, go to www.bloodcenter.org. Walk ins are welcome. Many variables can impact our blood inventories such as weather, holidays or tragic events. Every day, patients who need blood are in crisis and you can help by volunteering to donate. Less than 10% of the population gives blood, so donors that give on a regular basis are important to meet these needs. Schedule an appointment today. The monthly Writer;s Club Meeting will take place on August 30 4:30 pm at the Princeton Public Library. This group votes to decide the type of writing they will focus on for the following month. Writers are encouraged to share their work and receive constructive criticism. Participation in publishing contests with prizes is also encouraged. This program is free and all are welcome to attend.
