Weather Advisory: Excessive Heat Warning
Students, Faculty and Staff,
The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for Tuesday, August 27th, until 8 p.m., with heat index values forecast as high as 115 degrees in western Illinois.
In response to the weather, today’s scheduled Bonfire Social at Horn Field Campus, hosted by the Environmental Service Club, will be held in either the air-conditioned lounge or the shaded pavilion with no fire.
The University will follow best practices when it comes to athletic practices and events and will send a notice of any other changes. There are no outdoor events scheduled for the Quad Cities campus.
Heat related illnesses increase significantly during these events, and the National Weather Service recommends drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air-conditioned room, staying out of the sun and checking up on relatives and neighbors.
Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
