Judge Joe McGraw is the Republican nominee for the Illinois 17th Congressional District. Judge McGraw issued the following statement regarding the shooting of two Macomb Police Officers while serving a warrant Wednesday night.
“I reached out to the chief of police and mayor of Macomb and I’m carefully monitoring the tragic events of last night. I care deeply for the officers that have been injured and the entire Macomb community. I am praying for a speedy recovery for the two officers and the Macomb community at large. This is yet another reminder of the sacrifice our law enforcement officers make every day when they put on the uniform. I’ve spent my entire career in law enforcement – as a prosecutor and judge – I understand the importance of supporting our men and women that protect us.
Supporting law enforcement is a career and lifestyle choice that is demonstrated through action, not mere words of consolation when something bad happens. It is the culture of disrespect and hostility toward law enforcement promoted by those like Eric Sorensen that often emboldens those who would do harm to our law enforcement officers.
Eric Sorensen has a long history of disparaging our police and siding with criminals. He’s referred to law enforcement officers as “murderers” and has called for the defunding of our local police departments. This type of incendiary rhetoric is what gives permission to those that want to do harm.
I am proud to have the support of many of our local law enforcement officials, including the endorsements of 12 sheriffs, the IL FOP and several local police chiefs.
The people of Illinois’ 17th Congressional District deserve a representative that will prioritize law enforcement and public safety. As your next Congressman, I am committed to the rule of law, supporting our local law enforcement and holding criminals accountable.”
