The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is in Kewanee today, September 30th, assisting the City of Kewanee to haul away tree debris from the old hospital parking. Residents were allowed to drop tree debris from the July storms at the old hospital lot, which quickly filled to capacity. Residents expressed concern over the pile remaining there for so long and becoming a potential fire hazard. While city governments didn’t qualify for disaster relief aid, the State of Illinois is providing IDOT equipment to assist the City of Kewanee in moving the pile of tree debris. City Manager Gary Bradley said at a council meeting that the city doesn’t possess equipment large enough to tackle the pile and needed help from the state.
Once the tree debris has been removed from the old hospital site, the City of Kewanee anticipates beginning removal of storm debris from residential neighborhoods, using IDOT resources and equipment. The removal of debris from residential areas will be at NO cost. The timeline for residential collection is dependent on how long it takes to clear the old hospital parking lot and the resources provided by IDOT.
