The Galesburg Fire Department has awarded Joseph Lamnert the Civic Excellence Award for his quick action in extinguishing a kitchen fire at 1351 West Carl Sandburg Drive. On December 17, 2024, his quick thinking and use of a fire extinguisher were critical in preventing further destruction at the Hollow Tree Apartment Complex. The department praised Lamnert’s bravery and presence of mind, highlighting how his actions potentially saved lives and ensured the safety of residents. This award underscores the importance of community vigilance and proactive responses in emergencies.

“The combination of the working smoke detector, the readily available fire extinguisher, and Mr. Lamnert’s decisive action had a tremendous impact on the outcome of this incident,” said Fire Chief Hovind. “We are incredibly proud to honor and thank him today.”
