Redistricting Reform Still in Question from Springfield

Illinois House Republican’s gave an update this afternoon on the lawsuit they filed in late January in the Illinois Supreme Court, challenging the legislative map they claim unconstitutionally favors Democrats.

Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie (R-Savanna) said today that Illinois Attorney General, who is responsible for defending the state board of elections has declined to take a position on whether the complaint was filed in a timely manner.  She also reported that on Friday of last week, Michael Casper, Mike Madigan’s longtime friend, attorney, and number three on his magic lobbyist list, filed a brief to intervene on behalf of Senate President Harmon and House Speaker Welch.  McCombie believes this to be a positive development for the lawsuit.

Also part of the update was Deputy Minority Leader Ryan Spain (R-Peoria) who said Casper has been called the “chief weapon of Democrats” against redistricting reform in the state of Illinois.  Spain also said that time and again we’ve watched Democrat insiders conspire with one another to disenfranchise the people of the state of Illinois and prevent free and equal elections.

The Republican plaintiffs are asking the state Supreme Court to strike down the map and appoint a “Special Master” to draft a valid and constitutionally acceptable redistricting plan, an issue they say is going to positively benefit both Republicans and Democrats.
