Illinois fifth and sixth graders are engaging in an innovative educational contest, exploring environmental responsibility through creative expression. With the theme “How Can You Slash Your Trash?” students are inspired to reduce waste by proposing solutions like minimizing single-use products and composting. As part of the Illinois EPA’s initiative, these young environmentalists are crafting posters, poems, and prose that demonstrate their understanding of sustainable practices. Schools will select standout entries for competitive judging, fostering an early passion for environmental stewardship. This annual contest not only enhances educational experiences but also empowers students to think critically about sustainability.

“Each year, the Poster, Poetry, and Prose Contest provides us the opportunity to recognize the creative and artistic talents of environmentally engaged fifth and sixth grade students throughout Illinois,” said Illinois EPA Acting Director James Jennings. “We also want to thank the teachers and families for their participation, and for incorporating this important environmental topic into the classroom so the students can learn the importance of reducing the amount of waste they create.”
