WTA roundup: Swiatek, Pegula and Gauff upset in Stuttgart

Unseeded Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia maintained her supremacy over Poland’s Iga Swiatek by claiming a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victory over the second seed during Porsche Tennis Grand Prix quarterfinal play Saturday in Stuttgart, Germany.

Ostapenko, who improved her lifetime mark to 6-0 against the five-time majors champion, meets unseeded Ekaterina Alexandrova in Sunday’s first semifinal. The Russian needed just 81 minutes to knock off third-seeded Jessica Pegula 6-0, 6-4.

Top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus breezed through her first match in Stuttgart with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over former doubles partner Elise Mertens of Belgium. Sabalenka gets fifth-seeded Jasmine Paolini of Italy in the second semifinal thanks to Paolini’s 6-4, 6-3 triumph over fourth-seeded Coco Gauff.

Top-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine needed just 61 minutes to post a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse during semifinal play in Rouen, France. Svitolina did not allow Ruse to have a game point in the first set.

Svitolina will face Serbia’s Olga Danilovic in Sunday’s final. The third-seeded Danilovic secured a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands. The 30-year-old Svitolina, who owns 17 WTA titles, faces the 24-year-old Danilovic for the first time.
