Pritzker calls for sanctions on El Salvador

Gov. J.B. Pritzker has announced a series of measures against El Salvador in response to its role in what he called aiding the Trump administration’s defiance of court orders.

Pritzker is asking Illinois’ pension funds and procurement agencies to examine any investments or contracts they have with companies in El Salvador and any possible trade agreements. He said the moves were in response to El Salvador’s president’s willingness to help President Donald Trump imprison hundreds of migrants deported to El Salvador, including one man who was sent to prison following an administrative error.

Congresswoman asks for investigation of IHSA

Illinois Congresswoman Mary Miller is calling for an investigation into the Illinois High School Association’s policies. Miller sent a letter to the U.S. Attorney General’s Office and the Department of Education urging an investigation into actions that she said “undermines fairness and safety in girls’ sports.”

The IHSA recently said it would adhere to the Illinois Human Rights Act that requires that transgender athletes be permitted to participate in events and programs aligning with the gender they identify as.

Chicago firefighter dies

A Chicago fire captain died in the line of duty Wednesday when a garage collapsed as firefighters were assessing damage after putting out a blaze.

David Meyer, a 28-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department and father of four, died at Stroger Hospital after being transported in critical condition from the scene in the Austin neighborhood.
