Springfield, IL— Illinois Senate Republican Deputy Leader Sue Rezin (R-Morris) issued the following statement in response to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s visit to Springfield to highlight the dangers posed by Illinois’ sanctuary state policies:

“Secretary Noem’s visit brings a much-needed spotlight to the very real consequences of Illinois’ sanctuary policies.

“Laws that prohibit cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration officials are creating unnecessary and avoidable risks for our communities. When jails are blocked from alerting federal agents, even when dealing with violent offenders, that is a public safety failure.

“Despite our attempts to find answers, the Pritzker Administration won’t even disclose how many illegal immigrants are housed in state facilities like the Sheridan Correctional Center within my district. This lack of transparency isn’t just deeply troubling, it puts our citizens in potential danger when these individuals are released without informing federal officials.

“Governor Pritzker has made Illinois ‘the most welcoming state in the nation,’ but transparency has been in short supply. Illinoisans deserve to know how their tax dollars are being spent and whether our laws are keeping families safe.

“This issue is not just about the southern border. It is about what is happening in our own neighborhoods.”
