The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is raising awareness about a recent scam targeting mobile phone users with fake missed toll payment messages. Officials clarify that legitimate toll companies do not text payment notices—instead, any real toll notice arrives by mail to the car’s registered owner.
Common signs of these scams include threats of penalties or arrest and messages sent from suspicious numbers, especially those starting with the country code 63 rather than the U.S. code 1. Residents are urged to be cautious and, when in doubt, contact the Sheriff’s Office for assistance before responding to suspicious messages.
