Washington, DC – Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17) voted no against the Republican bill in the House Agriculture Committee that would make drastic cuts to the SNAP food assistance program, which helps hungry families and supports local grocery stores and farmers across Illinois’ 17th district.

“I am proud to have stood with thousands of families in Illinois against a cruel and un-American bill that would take food away from my neighbors,” said Congressman Eric Sorensen. “House Republicans are pushing more than $300 billion in cuts to the SNAP food assistance program that will devastate families, local grocery stores, and our farmers — all to pay for massive tax breaks for the wealthy. I will continue to oppose this deeply partisan bill and reckless attack on our neighbors struggling to keep up with rising food prices on the House floor.”

In Illinois’ 17th District, 64,000 families rely on SNAP to help make ends meet. Local grocers, farmers markets, and food producers also depend on SNAP purchases to stay afloat, contributing to the local economy while feeding their communities. In 2023, SNAP supported over $3.9 billion in purchases from small grocers and nearly $70 million in purchases from farmers and farmers markets across the country.
