Illinois lawmakers have unanimously approved a two-part measure aimed at boosting public health awareness. Sponsored by State Representative Dan Swanson, Senate Bill 1814 addresses the dangers of amniotic fluid embolisms during childbirth by requiring the Department of Public Health to provide more training and distribute educational materials to better recognize and treat this rare, life-threatening complication. A separate amendment will require local health departments to notify the public when Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is detected within their areas. The legislation now returns to the Senate for further consideration after receiving strong bipartisan support in the House.
