Biden to speak Thursday

Former President Joe Biden is scheduled to speak in Chicago Thursday at the National Bar Association’s 100th annual awards gala.

The group says Biden’s appearance underscores his ongoing efforts to strengthen the rule of law, defend voting rights, and support historically marginalized communities.

In April, Biden spoke at the Advocates, Counselors, and Representatives for the Disabled conference in Chicago.

Northwestern University announces cuts

Northwestern University has announced the elimination of about 425 staff positions, nearly half of which are currently vacant.

University President Michael Schill said the layoffs and other financial measures are in response to more than just a federal funding freeze.

Carjacker sentenced

A Chicago man has been sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for firing a handgun during an attempted carjacking and for carjacking a vehicle at gunpoint.

A jury convicted Kiar Evans, 26, last year of four counts, including illegal possession of a firearm by a previously-convicted felon.
