Visitation Catholic School Pioneers Early Spanish Education for Cognitive and Cultural Growth

Visitation Catholic School in Kewanee is taking a unique step by offering Spanish language classes to students from kindergarten through 8th grade. Instructor Maria Torres leads the initiative, providing tailored lessons for each grade level. The curriculum features not just language learning but also cultural activities designed to immerse students in Spanish-speaking traditions. Visitation stands out as the only local school offering early Spanish instruction, aiming to give its students a linguistic edge. Administrators highlight the importance of early language education for cognitive development and cultural awareness, positioning the program as a distinctive asset for the community.

“Elementary-aged children are more likely to retain a new language and achieve proficiency,” Maria Torres explained. “It’s a skill that makes you stand out.” While Spanish is not yet formally offered in Pre-K, those students are introduced to it through games and activities.

Younger students attend weekly 25-minute sessions, while older students engage in more intensive 45-minute classes, where they tackle high school-level material. Spanish teacher Ms. Torres assesses progress through participation, homework, and projects, reporting increased family engagement and students practicing at home. She suggests parents use repetition, flashcards, and apps to reinforce learning. With a dedicated textbook for every grade, expansion plans include launching Pre-K classes soon. The school’s approach aims to prepare students for advanced Spanish coursework in high school and beyond.
