LONDON (Reuters) -A Sudanese national has been found guilty of murdering a 27-year-old woman working at a hotel housing asylum seekers in central England where he had been staying, British prosecutors said on Friday.

In October last year Deng Chol Majek, 19, followed Rhiannon Whyte to a railway station after she had finished her shift before stabbing her with a screwdriver 23 times to the head, chest and arm, the Crown Prosecution Service said.

Whyte, who had been on the phone to a friend while the attack occurred, died in hospital three days later.

“He attacked her for no reason, and callously left her bleeding on a station platform. He then appeared to rejoice in his actions, having been caught laughing and dancing on footage an hour later,” prosecutor Carla Harris said in a statement.

Harris said Majek was convicted based on DNA evidence, witness accounts and CCTV showing him following the victim to the station and returning to the hotel in bloodied clothing.

Majek was convicted of murder and having an offensive weapon. He will be sentenced at a later date, prosecutors said.
