(Reuters) -The U.S. Congressional Budget Office was hacked by a suspected foreign actor in a breach that could have exposed key financial research data that American lawmakers use to craft legislation, the Washington Post reported on Thursday, citing four people familiar with the situation.

Officials discovered the incursion in recent days and now worry that communications between lawmakers’ offices and nonpartisan researchers could have been accessed by an adversary or one of its digital proxies, as well as internal email and office chat logs, the Post reported.

The CBO did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
