ICE wants 4,000 illegal aliens handed over

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Todd Lyons is calling on Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul to honor ICE arrest detainers of what Lyons said are “more than 4,000 criminal illegal aliens in the state’s custody.”

Lyons said crimes of the individuals with detainers include 51 homicides, 1,134 assaults and 813 sexual predatory offenses.

The ICE director said Illinois’ failure to honor detainers has resulted in the release of 1,768 criminal illegal aliens since Jan. 20.

ICE said in a statement that Raoul’s office did not respond to a letter sent in September, asking for cooperation.

Rocks, bottles thrown in Elgin

The Department of Homeland Security says the Elgin Police Department refused to protect U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers as rioters threw rocks and bottles at them last Saturday.

According to a DHS statement, the incident happened after a suspected Venezuelan national barricaded himself inside the apartment of a person he did not know.

DHS said Luis Jesus Acosta Gutierrez entered the U.S. illegally in 2023 and was released by the Biden administration.

Acosta Gutierrez was taken into custody and now faces removal proceedings.

Reentry grants announced

Chicago officials have announced $600,000 in grants of public funds to reentry service providers for the expansion of support programs and mental health services.

According to Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office, the grants were made possible through collaboration by United Way of Metro Chicago and the Chicago Department of Public Health.

Johnson said the city succeeds when Chicagoans returning from incarceration are given the chance to turn their lives around.
