(The Center Square) – As Michiganders gear up for holiday traveling, they’ll find gas prices lower than last Christmas.

According to AAA’s Michigan average, the current average for regular unleaded is $2.73 a gallon.

Mid-grade comes in at $3.34, premium at $3.90, and diesel at $3.62.

Those are all down from last week’s average, while slightly less than what the average was around Thanksgiving travel.

Gas prices in Michigan will be lower than last Christmas’ by about $0.30.

This Christmas, AAA projects 122.4 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home from Dec. 21 to Jan. 1. This is a 2.2% increase over 2024, surpassing last year’s record of 119.7 million travelers.

“Holiday celebrations look different for everyone, but a common thread is the desire to travel, whether it’s returning to your hometown or exploring new destinations,” said Stacey Barber, vice president of AAA Travel.

Michigan’s gas average is just slightly lower than the national average of $2.86, though some counties in the state are coming in at as high as $3.12.

Nationally, Hawaii has the most-expensive gas prices at $4.43, while Oklahoma has the cheapest at $2.32.
