In the early hours of September 27, 2024, a fire at 500 block N. Cherry Street in Galesburg, a fierce fire in a two-story residence on Fremont Street, led to the death of two individuals, John E. Stipp, 50, and six-year-old Kaiirree J. Hippen. The blaze, which caused significant damage estimated at $30,000 primarily to the upper levels of the home, prompted an aggressive response from local fire crews. Personnel encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear, second-story windows. Battalion Chief Derek Perry established command of the scene, and the Fremont Street and Central Station fire crews made entry to the residence with an attack hose line. Firefighters located and removed two victims from within the structure and were transported to OSF St. Mary’s Hospital by Galesburg Hospital Ambulance Service. Despite their efforts, which included rescuing a family dog and transporting eight other occupants for medical evaluation, the loss remains profound. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.
The eight occupants who self-evacuated were transported to OSF St. Mary’s Medical Center for evaluation. John E Stipp and Kaiirree J Hippen were pronounced deceased at OSF St. Mary’s Medical Center.
The fire remains under investigation by Galesburg Fire Investigators, Illinois State Police, Galesburg Police Investigators, and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
