A black bear sighting near Mississippi Palisades State Park has prompted alerts from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The animal was observed roaming close to private residences south and east of Galena. Officials advise residents in Jo Daviess and Carroll counties to secure garbage, pet food, and grills to reduce attractants. Experts say black bears rarely pose a danger if left undisturbed, but warn that feeding or approaching wildlife increases risks for both people and animals. The department continues to monitor the bear’s movements and encourages anyone spotting the animal to contact authorities rather than attempt interaction.
Anyone encountering the bear should leave plenty of space and back away slowly and quietly. If sightings continue even after securing garbage and food sources, residents are advised to contact Chris Jacques, IDNR’s large carnivore program manager at [email protected], or reach out to a local IDNR District Wildlife Biologist for guidance. For tips on coexisting with bears, visit the Wildlife Illinois website. Bear sightings can also be reported online through the IDNR’s official portal to assist with ongoing monitoring efforts.
