Aspiring to make a difference in people’s lives, Black Hawk College is unveiling a new Occupational Therapy Assistant program, starting in the Fall of 2025. OTAs, who play a crucial role in helping individuals regain independence in daily activities, now have the opportunity to train through this program. While prerequisites aren’t required, applicants must complete 10 hours of observation, provide a personal statement, and submit two recommendation letters by May 12, 2025. The program spans six semesters, ultimately leading to eligibility for the NBCOT Certification Exam.

Abigail Swidergal oversees the new BHC program and said she became an OTA because she wanted to help people, be hands-on and holistic, and work in a field that showed job stability and growth. “In clinical work, I loved every day of practice,” she said. “Seeing the progress of those I worked with and building relationships was the best part, and no two days looked the same.”

With 575 job postings in recent years, the field promises significant growth. Explore more at www.bhc.edu/ota.

“We’re starting this new chapter with a well-equipped lab and classroom – including models, equipment, adaptive tools and clinical materials – and a brand-new mock apartment to mirror real-world settings,” Swidergal said.

“With the opportunity to learn in the classroom, mock apartment, all over the BHC campus and within our community, students will experience an array of practice opportunities,” she said.
