Blood Emergency Declared as Red Cross is in Dire Need of Blood Donations

The American Red Cross has reported a significant drop in blood supply, decreasing by more than 25% recently, attributed to a combination of extreme heat and increased travel. The shortage is particularly severe for type O blood, which is essential for emergency situations. In response, the Red Cross is incentivizing donors with a $20 Amazon Gift Card for those who donate during August. This initiative aims to quickly replenish critical blood stocks to meet ongoing hospital demands. Community members are encouraged to help mitigate this urgent shortfall by visiting their local donation centers. Visit www.redcrossblood.org for more information.

“It’s critical hospitals have both type O positive and O negative blood ready to go for patients in the most life-threatening situations,” said Dr. Eric Gehrie, executive physician director for the Red Cross. “Type O is especially important for victims of accidents and other trauma who are receiving emergency treatment. Now is the time for donors of all blood types to give and ensure hospital shelves can be restocked before any impact to patient care.”
