Boaters Urged to Avoid Alcohol and Follow Safety Protocols on Illinois Waters

The Illinois Liquor Control Commission is issuing a reminder to boaters about the dangers and legal consequences of operating watercraft under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Authorities say impairment dramatically increases the risk of accidents on the water. As summer activities pick up, boaters are urged to stay sober, wear life jackets, and closely follow recommended safety protocols. The commission emphasizes that safe boating ensures a more enjoyable experience for everyone. Law enforcement agencies are expected to increase patrols and checks throughout the boating season to protect the public and prevent avoidable tragedies on Illinois waterways.

“Just like drinking and driving, Boating Under the Influence (BUI) puts everyone on the water at risk,” said Illinois Liquor Control Commission Executive Director Lisa Gardner. “Alcohol impairs judgment, reflexes, depth perception, and coordination. No matter how confident someone feels, alcohol’s effects on the body and mind increase the danger for boat operators, passengers, and others on the water. We want everyone to stay safe, stay smart, and enjoy Illinois’ waterways responsibly.”
