MACOMB, IL – The Macomb Bombers Varsity Boys basketball squad entered Friday evening’s Canton Sectional Championship match as an underdog to Rockridge for the second time this season, and avenged the disappointing late December loss by routing the Rockets 54-38 and taking the title of Class 2A Canton Sectionals champs, their first time since 2006.

The key to the Bombers success came from sinking 9 of 12 3-pointers shot in the contest, which helped the Bombers rally from a slow start that saw them down 7 after two minutes into the contest. The Bombers trailed until there were 3 minutes left in the first, when a pullup shot by Jake Hobson and a hook shot from forward Ian Case gave them a 24-20 lead. They never gave up the lead from that point on.

With this win, the Bombers advance to the Springfield Supersectional to face Williamsville, a 5-seed team that upset 2-seed Alton (Marquette) during the Beardstown Championship on Friday with a 48-47 win. The Bullets are 25-9 and ranked #18 in 2A basketball. The Bombers have had quite the run, taking down state title favorite Peoria Manual in last weekend’s sectional semifinal and Sherrard and Farmington before that.

The Bombers and Bullets will be taking to the court today at the Bank of Springfield Center for a 6:00 p.m. tipoff. The winner will be moving on to the State Semifinals to play the winner of the Chicago (Phillips) and Beecher game that starts at 7:00 p.m. in Joliet.
