Attendees should note that in the event of rain, the festivities will move indoors to ensure the celebration continues. Enthusiasts of spring traditions are encouraged to contact the Archives for further details and to join the exhilarating experience of marking the season’s arrival.

Valborg, deeply rooted in Viking history, marked the onset of spring with bonfires to ward off evil and promote fertility. Early Christians later intertwined these customs with honoring Saint Walpurga, canonized on May 1, around 870 AD. The fusion of traditions led to the creation of Walpurgis Night. Throughout the early modern era, Swedish farmers utilized Valborg celebrations for practical purposes, like scaring away predators before releasing livestock into summer pastures. Today, Valborg symbolizes the welcoming of longer, warmer days, continuing to be a culturally significant occasion in Sweden.

The Vasa National Archives is located at 109 S. Bishop Hill St., Bishop Hill, IL. For more information, contact the Vasa National Archives at [email protected] or 309-927-3898. In the event of rain, the festivities will be moved to the Vasa National Archive’s second floor.
