Chicago’s firefighting community is in mourning after the tragic loss of Captain David Meyer, a 54-year-old veteran who served nearly three decades with the department. Meyer died last week when a garage roof collapsed as he battled a suspicious blaze. Authorities have charged one man with murder and aggravated arson in connection with the fire. As funeral services bring together loved ones and colleagues, Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt urged the public to remember the daily risks firefighters face. The Illinois Fallen Heroes scholarship program stands ready to assist children of fallen firefighters, police, and paramedics with a $5,000 Bright Start college savings opportunity.
