A fire on Christmas Day displaces the occupants of a house in Kewanee and claims the life of a dog.  The Kewanee Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 500 block of 5th Avenue in Kewanee around 7:30 Monday night.  Chief Stephen Welgat said the fire was contained to the kitchen; however, there is significant smoke damage to the entire house.  The home’s occupants could safely escape before the fire department arrived.  Unfortunately, one dog was unable to escape the home and died from smoke inhalation.  The occupants of the residence were assisted in finding alternate housing.  The fire did not damage the surrounding structures and the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.
