The ongoing trade dispute between the U.S. and China is hitting Illinois farmers hard. Congressman Eric Sorensen is leading a call to President Trump, urging him to resolve the trade war immediately. With President Trump and China’s President Xi preparing for critical talks this week, Sorensen warns that without a new agreement, more farmers could face bankruptcy and the agricultural economy could plunge further. Last year, China accounted for half of Illinois’ soybean exports—now, those exports are down by 18%. The Illinois Soybean Association and Farm Bureau are backing Sorensen’s push, highlighting the urgent need for action to protect America’s farm economy.
“While Presidents Trump and Xi meet in Asia this week, thousands of farmers across the country are praying for an agreement that will save them from financial ruin this year,” said Congressman Sorensen. “President Trump’s reckless trade war with China has done nothing but raises prices on American consumers and crush the agriculture economy. It’s time for him to bring an end to the chaos with a trade deal that does right by our farmers.”
