Illinois residents have a unique opportunity to leave their mark on state history by submitting designs for a new state flag. With over 1,650 entries already, Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias encourages more participants to get involved before the October 18, 2024, deadline. This initiative, set forth by Senate Bill 1818, aims to reflect Illinois’ diverse communities better. Following the submission phase, the public will vote on potential designs starting January 1, 2025. The chosen flag could replace the current emblem or reinstate historical versions from 1918 or 1968. For contest details and entry, visit the Illinois Flag Commission or the Secretary of State’s website.

“The state design contest showcases the creativity of participants who can make their own history by designing a new flag for future generations,” Giannoulias said.

The public can vote for one of 10 new designs, or one of the three former flag designs, including the current state flag, the 1918 Centennial Flag, and the 1968 Sesquicentennial Flag.
