A long-time supporter of the Kewanee Henry County Humane Society donated a blanket she crocheted by hand to board members on Wednesday night at the shelter, which she hopes will bring much-needed donations to the Kewanee Animal Shelter. Anna Mae Sapp is 92 years old, loves to crochet, and loves animals. Her son Jim Ensley started the six-month project when he had the idea to combine two things she loves, crocheting and animals. Anna Mae crocheted the blanket with no problem, and she thought she could crochet the letters on the blanket, but she realized she needed help with the letters. So, Anna Mae called her sister in North Carolina and asked her if she would crochet the letters on the afghan. Her sister said yes, and the afghan was shipped across the country and returned back home to Kewanee about three months later. The afghan is white with orange and black lettering that spells out ‘Kewanee Animal Shelter’. The process from start to finish took at least six months, the lettering alone took three months, said Anna Mae. Anna Mae Sapp donates every month to the shelter, and the afghan was another way she wanted to help. Tickets will be sold for a chance to win the beautiful, one-of-a-kind afghan. The money will be used to help the Kewanee Animal Shelter care for the cats and dogs in their care. The raffle for the afghan will likely happen during the 3rd Annual Enchanted Pumpkin Festival. Anna Mae has one dog and two cats inside her house, and she has stray cats that she feeds and allows them to sleep in her garage. Anna Mae has the best advice, spay and neuter your animals.
