Princeton Public Library is rolling out a series of diverse and engaging in-person events this month. History enthusiasts can catch local author Rachael Mellen on October 16 as she dives into the Civil War letters of William J. Kennedy, illuminating the life of a LaSalle soldier and his family. Music lovers will find much to enjoy with Barry Cloyd’s celebration of Celtic Halloween traditions on October 21st and Peter Fletcher’s classical guitar performance spanning four centuries on October 23rd. The month wraps up on October 29th with Tricia Kelly’s exploration of the famously odd cartoonists Charles Addams and Edward Corey. All events are free and open to all.
History and genealogy enthusiasts are invited to a special author event this Thursday, October 16, at 6 p.m., featuring local writer Rachael Mellen. She will discuss her new book, From Camp Douglas to Vicksburg: The Civil War Letters of William J. Kennedy, 55th Illinois Infantry, 1861–1863. The book sheds light on the personal wartime experiences of William Kennedy, a LaSalle harness-maker turned soldier. Through original letters, preserved in the Lincoln Presidential Library, readers glimpse daily life and hardships during the war. Mellen uncovered her connection to Kennedy’s story through genealogy, helping bring previously forgotten histories back into the spotlight.
Music and storytelling fill October with unique events. Singer and storyteller Barry Cloyd presents “Samhain: The Celtic Roots of Halloween” on Tuesday, October 21 at 6 pm, exploring ancient traditions through music and legend. Classical guitarist Peter Fletcher takes the stage Thursday, October 23 at 6 pm, offering “Music of Four Centuries” spanning a range of styles and eras. Closing the month, Tricia Kelly hosts “Gruesome Twosome: Charles Addams and Edward Corey” on Wednesday, October 29 at 6 pm, delving into the lives, art, and haunting humor of America’s beloved spooky cartoonists.
