In response to a concerning report that nearly 30% of U.S.-Mexico border surveillance cameras are malfunctioning, Congressman Eric Sorensen and seven other lawmakers have pressed DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for immediate action. Highlighting the crucial role of these technologies in national security and law enforcement, the group emphasized their ongoing support for smart border solutions. Sorensen, known for his strong stance on border security, has previously championed significant initiatives, including increased CBP staffing and enhanced measures to curb the fentanyl crisis. The call for operational integrity in surveillance systems underscores the critical nature of these technologies in maintaining effective border security.
“Surveillance technologies allow DHS to enforce the law and protect the homeland effectively and efficiently,” Sorensen and the Members wrote. “As Members of Congress, we have consistently and robustly funded programs for smart border technologies for DHS, and as a result, unauthorized border crossings have dropped significantly to the lowest levels in years. The reports of failing technology have left us concerned about the effectiveness of our border security operations.”
