In Peoria County, a groundbreaking initiative aims to enhance interactions between emergency responders and the autism and special needs community. The LINKED-Autism Safety Project, developed by Ashley McClain, a mother within the autism community, facilitates this vital connection. This voluntary program allows caregivers to provide crucial, individualized information via a secure registration system accessible on the Sheriff’s Office website. Registered families receive a comprehensive Family Emergency Planning Packet, which includes tailored guidance and a unique social story to aid communication. Additionally, deputies are equipped with sensory packs and an Emergency Picture Exchange Communication System in their vehicles, ensuring they are prepared to meet the community’s diverse needs. Sheriff Chris Watkins emphasizes the commitment to ongoing training and development to better serve and protect all residents. Deputies will also receive training from a Pathways Teacher at Dunlap High School, Nicole Zook.
This program is a voluntary registration for Peoria County’s official Special Needs Alert System. Caregivers of Peoria County’s autism and special needs community can access the registration form from the Sheriff’s Office’s website at https://www.peoriacounty.gov/1301/LINKED-Autism-Safety-Project.
