File Federal Taxes for Free with IRS Direct File for Illinois Taxpayers

Illinois taxpayers have a new, free option for filing federal taxes this year. The IRS is promoting its Direct File service, a web-based platform now available in both English and Spanish. Designed for straightforward tax situations, it accommodates income types such as W-2 wages and Social Security benefits. While the tool simplifies federal filing, it doesn’t handle state returns. However, it conveniently directs users to Illinois’ state tax services for completing their local filings. This initiative aims to make tax season less stressful and more accessible for residents navigating their obligations.

Although the deadline to file a 2024 tax return and pay any tax owed is April 15, 2025, Direct File will be open until Oct. 15, 2025, for people who may need additional time to file.
