Flu and COVID Cases Surge in Illinois as Officials Urge Vaccination and Precautions

Illinois faces a surge in flu activity, now at very high levels, according to the Department of Public Health. Officials have confirmed the season’s first pediatric flu-related death, raising concerns across the state. COVID-19 cases are also on the rise, prompting renewed urgency. Health experts are urging residents to get vaccinated against both illnesses, practice frequent hand washing, and remain at home if experiencing symptoms. These precautions, they say, are critical to protecting vulnerable groups and lessening the burden on hospitals. The department encourages the public to take these recommendations seriously as the winter illness season intensifies.

“Illinois is facing a significant winter surge in seasonal respiratory illnesses with flu activity at very high levels,” said IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra. “Vaccinations remain the most effective tool to prevent severe illness from flu, COVID-19, and RSV. Simple steps like covering coughs and sneezes, washing hands regularly, staying home when sick if you are able, and improving ventilation are also critical to preventing further spread. If you develop symptoms, it is important to get evaluated and treated early in your illness, especially if you are 65 years or older, are a young child under the age of 2 years, are pregnant, have chronic conditions, or care for someone at risk. IDPH is monitoring the situation closely and working with our partners in public health and healthcare to protect Illinois families across the state.”

Illinois has recorded its first pediatric influenza death of the season, adding to the ongoing national concern, where nine such deaths have occurred across the country. In the previous 2024/2025 season, the state documented 12 pediatric influenza fatalities, six from RSV, and three from COVID-19. Health officials encourage residents to check the Illinois Department of Public Health’s Seasonal Respiratory Illness Dashboard for the latest updates. Currently, less than a quarter of Illinoisans have received a flu shot, and COVID-19 immunization rates remain below seven percent. Information about vaccines and local availability is accessible via the state’s vaccine locator dashboard.
