Illinois Valley Community College’s summer camps welcomed familiar faces this year as former campers Katie Sowers and Cole Haynes returned to lead activities for a new generation. Sowers lent her expertise to art and technology programs, inspiring students through creative projects. Meanwhile, Haynes assisted at the popular fishing camp under the guidance of his mother, encouraging young participants to develop both confidence and angling abilities. Their involvement highlights the camp’s tradition of nurturing local talent, with alumni stepping up to motivate and mentor. Organizers say this continuity has enriched the program, fostering community spirit and passing down valuable experience.

From former camper to cherished camp assistant, University of Arizona student Katie Sowers brings energy and creativity to IVCC’s Ed’Venture camps each summer. Once excitedly circling art activities in the camp catalog, Sowers now helps lead rocket launches, guide explorations of the insect world, and assist future filmmakers. The transformation in her young campers—watching shyness fade as curiosity and friendships blossom—mirrors her own journey. While majoring in business and enjoying new experiences with her sorority, Sowers values her unexpected role mentoring kids. She says, “It’s fun to see them get excited about the same things I did.”

As summer winds down, recent Grand View University graduate Cole Haynes is making waves at IVCC’s fishing camp. While considering career options after earning his business administration degree, Haynes has volunteered his time teaching youngsters the basics of casting, baiting, and releasing fish – even gladly surrendering his favorite tackle to excited beginners. The experience, he says, is more than about fishing; it’s about passing on confidence and creating memorable experiences. Plans for the future include launching a machine shop to craft wild game calls, blending his business ambitions with a lifelong passion for outdoor activities rooted in family traditions.
