Freedom House to celebrate opening of new Kewanee Shelter with ribbon-cutting on July 15th
Freedom House is set to open a new 40-bed emergency shelter for survivors of domestic and sexual violence in Kewanee. The grand opening and ribbon-cutting will take place Wednesday, July 15th, 2026, at 11 AM at 716 Elliott Street. The facility, created from a former OSF HealthCare medical office building, includes private family spaces, children’s play areas, communal living and dining areas, and enhanced security. The facility, donated by OSF HealthCare to Freedom House in 2024, marks one of north-central Illinois’ largest investments in victim services in decades.
“This building represents far more than bricks and mortar,” said Diana Whitney, President of the Freedom House Board of Directors. “It represents hope, healing, and a safe place where survivors can begin rebuilding their lives. Every room reflects our community’s commitment to protecting those experiencing abuse.”
Freedom House says the project was funded entirely through private charitable support, with no taxpayer dollars.
“This project demonstrates what is possible when a community comes together around a common purpose,” said Chloe Lund, Freedom House chief operating officer. “We are deeply grateful to the hundreds of donors, businesses, foundations, volunteers, and community partners whose generosity made this vision a reality.”
Freedom House continues to provide free, confidential support for survivors of domestic and sexual violence across Bureau, Henry, Marshall, Putnam, and Stark counties, with no residency requirement for services. The agency operates shelters in Princeton and Kewanee, along with counseling and advocacy offices in Geneseo, Cambridge, Kewanee, and Lacon. Services include a 24/7 hotline, emergency shelter, legal and medical advocacy, psychotherapy for adults, teens, and children, substance-use recovery support, prevention education, and professional training.
