Galesburg firefighters battled a structure fire and rescued two cats on West Losey Steet in sub-zero temperatures on January 16, 2024. The Galesburg Fire Department responded to the structure fire around 11:24 PM to find flames engulfing the covered front porch on the east side of the residence. The occupant of the residence safely evacuated before the fire department’s arrival. The Central Station crew extinguished the fire. Fire crews rescued two cats from inside the residence.
An emergency callback of off-duty fire personnel was initiated to provide emergency coverage to the city and relieve fire crews that were working in sub-zero temperatures. Preliminary damages are estimated at approximately $15,000.
The exterior of the structure sustained heavy fire damage, and the first floor of the residence sustained moderate smoke damage throughout. Galesburg Fire Department investigators ruled the cause of the fire unintentional.
