A Galesburg Hy-Vee was evacuated after a suspicious device was found on a pallet of grapes. On January 1, 2024, the Galesburg Police Department was dispatched to the Hy-Vee on North Henderson Street for a suspected bomb that was delivered to the store with a pallet of grapes. According to the Galesburg Police, the device had duct tape with wires attached. The store was evacuated out of an abundance of caution. The Peoria Bomb Squad was called to inspect the device and found that it was not an explosive device, just tape and wires surrounding the grapes. This incident was determined to be a hoax but the Galesburg Police Department said this was a serious crime and caused significant disruption to the business of the store as well as public safety resources. The Galesburg Police Department said there will be an investigation into the incident to identify those responsible and hold them accountable. The Galesburg Police Department was assisted by Hy-Vee Asset Protection, the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, the Illinois Secretary of State Police Bomb Squad, the Peoria Bomb Squad, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
