Residents in Galesburg can expect official notification regarding the presence of PFOA, a man-made chemical, found slightly above newly established state standards in the city’s water supply. City officials stress that significant progress has been made, with PFOA levels already cut by half since 2021. Ongoing efforts include upgrading treatment systems and exploring long-term solutions to ensure safe drinking water for all. Authorities encourage residents to stay informed and assure the community that meeting state regulations and protecting public health remain top priorities as work continues. Updates on additional measures and progress are expected in the coming weeks.
“Providing Galesburg residents with the highest quality drinking water is our top priority,” stated Aaron Gavin, Public Works Director. “We are actively addressing PFOA and aggressively pursuing the most effective, sustainable solutions. When all is said and done, our commitment to transparency and the safety of our water supply remain paramount.”
Following the IEPA recommendation, the city is informing all consumers of the PFOA results through the distribution of the IEPA letters and notifications. A copy of the notice, as well as PFAS fact sheets, can be found on the city’s website.
