Aspiring mechanics in Kewanee will have new opportunities as Gustafson Ford donates top-tier automotive tools to Kewanee High School’s automotive program. Presented by owner Kurt Gustafson, joined by his wife and daughter, the donation was made in front of the school’s automotive classroom, highlighting a commitment to local workforce development. The tools enhance learning for students under instructor Dave Armstrong, a Navy veteran and experienced technician. This partnership with Ford Motor Company and community leaders strengthens hands-on education, helping students earn industry credentials. Emphasizing career success, the move underscores the importance of equipping the next generation for regional technical careers.

With years as an automotive technician at Gustafson Ford and experience as a U.S. Navy plane captain, Armstrong brings real-world know-how to the classroom. His hands-on approach is further strengthened by his continued work operating his own automotive business since 2012. Students will use a new set of professional tools to practice vehicle diagnostics and repairs, while also developing discipline, critical thinking, and a sense of professionalism—skills that Armstrong believes are crucial for success in the auto industry and beyond.

Representatives gathered outside the Kewanee High School automotive classroom as Gustafson Ford presented a significant donation to the school, witnessed by students and faculty. Owner Kurt Gustafson emphasized the importance of supporting the next generation, honoring his father’s tradition of empowering youth through education and opportunity. The Gustafson family, including Kurt’s wife Carrie and daughter Courtlin, was on hand to celebrate the occasion and see the positive impact of their family’s ongoing commitment to the community. The donation, made in partnership with the Ford Pro Mobile Service van, aims to bolster technical education and future careers in the automotive industry.

Superintendent Rebecca Baney thanked Gustafson Ford for their support of the Kewanee Community Unit School District 229’s Mission, which is to “educate the whole child by inspiring intellectual curiosity and honoring each student’s emotional and personal growth.”

Students at Kewanee High School are shifting into high gear with the school’s innovative automotive program. This hands-on course offers young people experience in vehicle maintenance and repair, equipping them with practical skills sought by employers across the region. Participants work with professional-grade tools and follow industry standards, paving the way toward industry-recognized credentials. Instructors say the real-world training not only boosts student confidence but also addresses the local demand for skilled automotive technicians. Graduates from the program are well-positioned for immediate job opportunities or further education in automotive technology.
