September marks Suicide Prevention Month, and the Henry and Stark County Health Department, together with First Choice Healthcare, is raising awareness about the urgent need for mental health support. Recent data highlights a sobering reality: in 2022, the U.S. saw a record number of suicides—one every 11 minutes. High rates of suicide attempts were seen across all age and racial groups, and nearly 108,000 people died from drug overdoses. The Health Department and First Choice Healthcare are highlighting the availability of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Anyone can call, text, or use 988lifeline.org to connect with trained crisis counselors 24 hours a day for support with mental health or substance use concerns. Residents can also access mental health services through First Choice Healthcare’s staff, including a psychiatric nurse practitioner and therapists available in clinic-based or school-based settings. Area employers and groups are encouraged to arrange QPR Suicide Prevention Training, designed to help individuals recognize warning signs and respond effectively. To schedule a session, contact 309-852-5272 Ext. 261.

The latest data reveal a concerning rise in suicide rates across the U.S. in 2022, with one life lost every 11 minutes—the highest total ever seen. Youth from diverse backgrounds faced significant challenges, with over 12% of Asian, Latino, and Black youth and more than 15% of multiracial youth reporting serious thoughts of suicide, plans, or attempts.
