MACOMB, IL – The Humane Society of McDonough County (HSMC) has announced they are celebrating the 10-Year Anniversary of the Brix Challenge, a fundraising event to help raise funds for the annual operating costs for HSMC which helps save lives and helps animals in need in McDonough County now through October 31st.

HSMC reports their annual operations costs at $40,000 to $50,000, which covers on-going programs and day-to-day dedicated works. Last year, medical assistance to the McDonough County Animal Shelter from HSMC increased exponentially as the dogs at the shelter battled against heartworm and Parvo, in addition to on-going respiratory illnesses and other specialized medical needs in the shelter’s cat population. These treatments were very expensive, but deemed necessary so that the animals could find homes.

HSMC is also looking to build a small calming structure and enclosure at Gossel’s Dog House, a dog day care in Macomb which fosters dogs that need extra time, attention, and space to help them adjust and ease back into life with humans and other dogs prior to being adopted.

According to a release issued by HSMC, the Brix Challenge:

  • designates 100% of the funds raised to the annual operating costs of the HSMC for daily ongoing needs.
  • allows HSMC to provide direct support to the McDonough County Animal Shelter on an on-going basis. Although the McDonough County Animal Shelter (MCAS) is run by the county, not the Humane Society of McDonough County, a large portion of the HSMC’s work is devoted to supporting the county-run animal shelter. Assistance to animals at the MCAS includes:
    • Promoting adoptions
    • Providing sponsorships
    • A rescue/foster/adoption program
    • Providing emergency medical assistance
    • Assisting with care
    • Socialization of animals while they are at the shelter
    • Enhancements for the comfort of the animals at the shelter
  • Allows the HSMC to provide many services to animals and pet owners on an on-going basis. Those initiatives include: Spay/neuter transports and programs, the Angel emergency medical fund, a pet food pantry and more.
